Settlement Workers in School

Settlement Workers in School (SWIS) are here to assist families to better understand the education system. They also provide information and referrals to families on other aspects of life in Canada.

SWIS workers assist school staff to see school through the eyes of a newcomer and their purpose is to increase awareness of newcomer issues.

The settlement staff speak English, High & Low German, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi and Gujarati. Interpreters for other languages may be available upon request.

Examples of what a SWIS does:

  • Establish and maintain contact with families to determine their needs

  • School orientations designed for newcomer students

  • School registration and orientation

  • Connect families to resources and services in the community

  • Provide settlement services and information to newcomer families
